EU Declares Peppermint a Controllable Herb
The madness knows no bounds! Access to humble peppermint may be at risk in the EU.
by Heidi Stevenson

12 November 2010
Peppermint tea

In its ongoing efforts to make absolutely certain that every aspect of every person's life is controlled in the minutest detail, the European Union is examining every herb to determine whether there's even the slightest hint of a chance it might be either harmful or useful. To this end, peppermint has been classified as a controllable medicinal herb.(1)

That sounds like the start of a farce, of an article meant to be a joke. It isn't. It has really happened. The EU has listed Mentha x piperita, common peppermint, for regulation as a medicinal herb. The only thing that could make this worse would be for someone to claim that it can be of benefit in a serious disease.

Oops! We may have a problem. Peppermint is known to be beneficial in irritable bowel syndrome and spastic conditions of the bile duct, both of which might be considered serious conditions. Conveniently, the EU has not defined the term "serious condition", so we can't yet be sure.

If either irritable bowel syndrome or spastic condition of the bile duct is seen as a serious condition, then peppermint could be banned. The EU's Traditional Medicinal Herbal Products Directive will not allow herbs to be sold for "serious" conditions.

Once existing stocks have been sold after next April Fool's Day, the EU may not allow its sale as a beneficial herb. At a minimum, EU citizens will not be able to purchase it in a form intended for medicinal use for any serious condition or for any minor condition unless each manufacturer goes through a prohibitively expensive and draconian procedure to prove that their particular version is both safe and efficacious.

The individual who grows peppermint—or any other herb—and sells it in any form will be breaking the law, unless that person is exceedingly wealthy and able to jump through the hoops that the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) require.

If the procedure is too complicated to understand, then you can purchase documentation on how to negotiate the process for a mere £250 or $395.

After April Fool's Day, if you grow herbs in the garden, then process them into oils or teas or simply sell the dried leaves, you will be breaking the law...unless you have the finances and will to submit to the MHRA rules.

Is this the world you want? Are you willing to give up your right to manage your health as you see fit? Are you willing to allow a pharmaceutical-controlled agency to determine whether you may sell or have access to herbs? If that's what you want, then do nothing.

However, if you want to see this draconian direction stopped, then please, sign the Stop the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive petition. The EU has not made it easy to petition the government for changes in laws or directives or procedures. They require that a petition have at least a million signatures before it can be presented.

Let's give them a wake-up call! Let's get those signatures! Let's assure that the EU comes to realize that this is not something we're willing to accept, that we will stand together and Stop the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive!

Big Pharma Scores Big Win: Medicinal Herbs Will Disappear in EU
It's almost a done deal. We are about to see herbal preparations disappear, and the ability of herbalists to prescribe them will also be lost.

Big Pharma Scores Big Win: Medicinal Herbs Will Disappear in EU

Big Pharma has almost reached the finish line of its decades-long battle to wipe out all competition. As of 1 April 2011—less than eight months from now—virtually all medicinal herbs will become illegal in the European Union. The approach in the United States is a bit different, but it's having the same devastating effect. The people have become nothing more than sinks for whatever swill Big Pharma and Agribusiness choose to send our way, and we have no option but to pay whatever rates they want.

Big Pharma and Agribusiness have almost completed their march to take over every aspect of health, from the food we eat to the way we care for ourselves when we're ill. Have no doubt about it: this takeover will steal what health remains to us.

If you want to skip the text and find out what you can do, click here.
It Begins Next April Fools Day

In the nastiest April Fool's Joke of all time, the European Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products (THMPD) was enacted back on 31 March 2004.(1) It laid down rules and regulations for the use of herbal products that had previously been freely traded.

This directive requires that all herbal preparations must be put through the same kind of procedure as pharmaceuticals. It makes no difference whether a herb has been in common use for thousands of years. The costs for this are far higher than most manufacturers, other than Big Pharma, can bear, with estimates ranging from £80,000 to £120,000 per herb, and with each herb of a compound having to be treated separately.

It matters not that a herb has been used safely and effectively for thousands of years. It will be treated as if it were a drug. Of course, herbs are far from that. They're preparations made from biological sources. They aren't necessarily purified, as that can change their nature and efficacy, just as it can in food. It's a distortion of their nature and the nature of herbalism to treat them like drugs. That, of course, makes no difference in the Big Pharma-ruled edifice of the EU, which has enshrined corporatism in its constitution.

Dr. Robert Verkerk of the Alliance for Natural Health, International (ANH) describes the problem of requiring drug-like compliance on herbal preparations:

Getting a classical herbal medicine from a non-European traditional medicinal culture through the EU registration scheme is akin to putting a square peg into a round hole. The regulatory regime ignores and thus has not been adapted to the specific traditions. Such adaptation is required urgently if the directive is not to discriminate against non-European cultures and consequently violate human rights.(2)

Trade Law

To best understand how this can be happening, one needs to see that trade laws have been at the center of the moves to place all aspects of food and medicine under the control of Big Pharma and Agribusiness.

If you've followed what's been happening in the United States regarding raw milk and the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) claims that foods magically become drugs when health claims are made, you may have noted that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been part of the process.

Rather than treating food and traditional medicines as human rights issues, they have been treated as trade issues. That makes the desires of large corporations the focus of food and herbal law, rather than the needs and desires of people. It's this twisting that has resulted in the FDA's making outrageously absurd statements, such as claiming that Cheerios and walnuts quite literally become drugs simply because of health claims made for them.

The goal of it all is to make the world safe for the megacorporations to trade freely. The needs and health of the people simply are not a factor in their considerations.
How to Fight This Encroachment on Our Health and Welfare

It's not a done-deal, at least, not quite. If you value your access to herbs, or if you care about access to vitamins and other supplements, please take action. Even if these issues seem meaningless to you, consider the people who do care. Should they be denied the right to the medical treatment and health maintenance of their choice?

The ANH has been active in fighting these encroachments. They are currently going to court in an attempt to stop the implementation of THMPD. We can hope that they'll succeed, but recent history shows that no legal maneuver is likely to stop this juggernaut. We cannot afford to sit back and wait for the results of their efforts. We need to see their endeavor as part of a whole, one in which each of us plays a role.

It's up to us—each and every one of us—to take action. If you live in Europe, please, send a letter or message to your Member of European Parliament. Go to this page to find out who is your MEP and the contact information. Then, send a letter that states, in no uncertain terms, that you strongly support the ANH's actions in trying to suspend the implementation of THMPD and that you hope they will also take a stand in support of the people's right to choose herbal treatments.

If you find it difficult to write such a letter, click here for a sample (in the universal .rtf format) suggested by ANH. Feel free to use it.

Denice Delay has kindly translated the letter into Spanish. Thanks!

Try to imagine facing your children or grandchildren when they ask why you didn't. How will you tell them that you really weren't that interested in their welfare? How will you tell them that it was more important to watch the latest fake reality show on television than to take the time to write a simple letter?

It is only by actively protesting that this travesty against our welfare can be stopped. If we sit back in apathy, then it will happen. Our right to protect our health and that of our children is hanging in the balance. If you care for your child's or grandchild's welfare, then you must act. Speak out, for now is the moment of truth. You can sit back and do nothing, or you can speak out.

And then, once you have, talk to everyone you know. Tell them that it's time to act. There truly is no time to waste.

Fighting the Fires InsideBy Ian Robinson | Posted on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 Share |
A brand new study – just released in medical journal Cell – shows that dietary fat can combat some of today's worst diseases. But that doesn't mean any old fat is good for you. It's vital that you eat the right kind of fat. And avoid the "bad" kind.
That's because dietary fats either combat – or trigger – a biological process that may be the root cause of many of today's most dangerous illnesses.
Dozens of other studies – and several leading doctors – agree that this process is the main culprit behind arthritis, cancer, and diabetes.
That culprit is called inflammation. And the fats you eat either promote or combat it.

New Research Promotes Fats
The new findings come from the University of San Diego. Researchers showed that certain dietary fats reduce chronic inflammation – and can combat diabetes.

They tested their theory on lab mice. Half the group were fed a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids. The other half ate a diet low in omega-3s. At the end of the study all the mice on the high omega-3 diet showed major reductions in inflammation... increased insulin sensitivity... and all-around better health. The mice on the low omega-3 diet showed increased levels of inflammation... and decreased insulin sensitivity.
The researchers concluded that "omega-3 fats have the best effect" for reducing inflammation and improving health.
What Is Inflammation?
Pioneering doctors – and dozens of previous studies – support this evidence.
"Inflammation is the root cause of many illnesses," says Dr. Andrew Weil. "These include heart disease, cancers, and Alzheimer's disease."
Dr. Weil is a Harvard Medical School graduate and internationally recognized nutrition expert. He's spent the last 40 years leading prestigious medical institutions in the U.S. And he's fighting to expose inflammation as the leading cause of modern disease.
He says inflammation is your body's natural response to injury. If you are stung by a wasp... you'll swell up where you are stung. If you hit something, your hand will redden and bruise. Your muscles may be sore after a hard workout. These are all forms of inflammation.
Likewise, when your body is invaded by bacteria, your immune system kicks in. It signals your body's resources to respond to that bacteria. This is a process we call inflammation.
To fight infection, your body uses white cells. These white cells secrete chemicals as a defense against the infection.
We call these chemicals interleukin-6 (IL-6), CRP, and free radicals. These compounds combat germs and remove damaged cells.
After a normal infection, your body recovers. Your immune system settles down. And inflammation recedes.
Why Diet Affects Inflammation
Inflammation is a finely balanced process that fights infection and repairs damage.
"It is the body's healing response, bringing nourishment and immune activity to a site of injury or infection," says Dr. Weil. "But when inflammation persists or serves no purpose, it damages the body and causes illness."
Diet unbalances this process. Why? Because diet can trigger inflammation. If your body identifies certain foods as toxins... it thinks it's under attack. And triggers an inflammatory response.
But there's a key reason why dietary fat is crucial to inflammation. That's because your body creates prostaglandins. These either cause – or reduce – inflammation. The thing is... the "parent" molecules of these prostaglandins come from dietary fatty acids.
Your body uses these dietary fats to make even more powerful prostaglandins. And they either boost inflammation or combat it.
That means the kind of fats you eat are crucial to your well-being. They can literally turn off inflammation. And that's a critical step in fighting arthritis, cancer, and heart disease.
We'll investigate this more on Friday. We will also reveal which dietary fats you need to avoid to cut inflammation... and fight disease.
To your health,

A Special Report from Victor Marchione, MD
** Is Your Cell Phone Dangerous to Your Health?

Did you know that the billions of cells in your body
communicate with each other through low electromagnetic
signals? This communication happens continuously along a
whole network of signal pathways inside your body. Information
that travels along this communication network is used for all the
biochemical and physiological processes of your body.
Unfortunately, when you are exposed to electromagnetic
radiation (EMR) from the outside world, these very important
processes can be disrupted and messages between cells thrown
off their pathways.

As you can imagine, this has the potential to cause serious
problems with your health. Cell membranes can literally harden,
damage occurs and then things are definitely not going to work
properly. If you could see inside your own body and watch your
own biochemical processes, you would notice that nutrients
aren't getting into cells, and toxins aren't getting out. Your
immune system can become compromised. Your nervous system
is likely to be affected. And your brain may be in danger, too.

When EMR interferes with your body, your hormones may get
thrown seriously out of whack. Estrogen, progesterone,
testosterone, and other heavy-hitters in your endocrine system
can fluctuate when barraged with electro-magnetic radiation.
The reason why this can create serious problems for you is
that your hormones literally control the activity of your cells and
your organs. Estrogen is needed to regulate your metabolism and
to aid bone formation, for example. And testosterone is
important for energy and immune function.

What is one of the biggest sources of EMR? Cell phones release
radiation every time you talk on the phone. In fact, some studies
suggest that 70% to 80% of radiation from cell phones is
absorbed into your head. Even if conclusive evidence is still
forthcoming regarding cell phone use and health, common sense
says that a deluge of radiation like that can't be considered
harmless: it will affect you in some way, and it will likely be a
negative effect.

In one recent study, radiation from cell phones could be the
cause of an increase in brain cancers among women 20 to 29
years old (a group that is made up of some of the heaviest cell
phone users).

Now a new problem has arisen in connection with cell phone
use. It seems that a rash can appear along your jaw, cheek or ear.
In this case however, the rash isn't caused by EMR, but is the
result of a nickel allergy.

Symptoms of cell phone allergy can include a red, bumpy, itchy
rash in areas where the nickel-containing parts of a cell phone
touch the face. It can even affect fingertips of those who text
continuously on buttons containing nickel. In severe cases,
blisters and itchy sores can develop.

To remedy this problem, buy a phone cover, opt for a hands-free
device, use the speaker phone or switch to a phone that doesn't
contain nickel on surfaces that touch your skin.

Hi dk

Found this on cell phone dangers.

Glad my mobile now stays in the cupboard and goes out in the car for emergencies only.

We dont get a signal at home due to location which also meant my kids didn't grow up micro-waving their brains.

I believe the damage being done is a silent ticking time bomb.

It wouldn't suprise me if interested parties were doing secret tests in mortaries to trully establish actual damage being done.

"The first thing to be degraded in any nation is the state of Man, himself. Nations which have high ethical tone are difficult to conquer. Their loyalties are hard to shake, their allegiance to their leaders is fanatical, and what they usually call their spiritual integrity cannot be violated by duress. It is not efficient to attack a nation in such a frame of mind. It is the basic purpose of [mind-control] to reduce that state of mind to a point where it can be ordered and enslaved. Thus, the first target is Man, himself. He must be degraded from a spiritual being to an animalistic reaction pattern. He must think of himself as an animal, capable only of animalistic reactions. He must no longer think of himself, or of his fellows, as capable of 'spiritual endurance,' or nobility... " The Illuminati Formula 10. Spiritual Control Techniques, Possession, Trances, Etc. A. From friend in California.

California WatchBlogReport: Hospital errors cause 15,000 deaths per monthNovember 17, 2010 | Christina JewettAndy G/Flickr
A major federal study released yesterday suggests that state regulators aren't getting the full story from California hospitals when it comes to reporting serious lapses in care. And if the results of the nationwide probe apply here, hospitals could be withholding reports of as many as 20,000 incidents.
The federal study [PDF] found that one in seven Medicare patients are harmed while in a U.S. hospital, and 15,000 die each month as a result of lapses by hospitals and their employees.
The report by the Health and Human Services Inspector General's Office found that 44 percent of the errors were preventable and spurred declarations of a crisis.
The report is based on the findings of a team of doctors who reviewed the records of 780 Medicare patients who were in a U.S. hospital during October of 2008. The report findings are considered reliable enough to draw conclusions about all Medicare patients who received care in a hospital.
If their conclusions hold in California, then the implications are serious.
In the fine print of the report [PDF], you can see that a tiny fraction of the medical errors are so-called "never events," [PDF] as defined by the National Quality Forum. (They're now called "serious reportable events," but I'll use the shorter designation for now.)
Those include leaving a sponge inside a patient after surgery, operating on the wrong patient and two dozen other mishaps that California now requires hospitals to report [PDF].
In the 780 cases that doctors examined, they found only five such cases, representing 0.64 percent of the total and including serious medical errors and major bedsores.
Multiply that by the million cases during the study period, and the report authors estimate that such incidents befall just over 6,300 Medicare patients in a month.
Ever curious, I wondered, if these worst-case scenarios happen in 0.64 percent of hospital stays nationwide, what do the numbers look like in California?
Here's what I found. According to OSHPD, there were about 3.73 million hospital discharges [PDF] in California in 2008. Assuming that the rate of disasters affecting Medicare patients nationwide also applies to patients in California, you'd expect a total of 23,757 "never events," like medication-related deaths or serious bedsores.
The report estimates that the percentage rate of 0.64 serious errors could actually be as low as 0.27 percent or as high as 1.53 percent, putting California's expected number of errors as low as 10,000 or as high as 57,000.
Let's compare that with the number of such events that California hospitals reported in 2008. According to the Department of Public Health, hospitals reported 1,509 such incidents in the 2008-09 fiscal year.
The state also fined hospitals that year for failing to report 153 events on time, typically nabbing hospitals when they file a report after the legal timeframe.
That leaves, by my count, roughly 20,000 incidents that may have occurred but were never reported.
Certainly, there could be problems with the study that make it risky to draw such a conclusion. For one, the inspector general only looked at cases in October, and it could be argued that doctors and nurses were particularly absent-minded that month. The study also looked at patients who were mostly 65 and older, which could be a group that is more prone than the general California population to get bedsores or experience falls and other "never events." And the fact that only 5 of the 780 cases involved "never events" could raise questions about drawing any major conclusions.
Still, as I wrote a couple weeks ago, state authorities already told Sen. Elaine Alquist, an architect of the adverse event disclosure laws, that they are pressing hospitals to disclose adverse events.
Public health officials wrote to the chief executives of 80 hospitals that never reported a single serious lapse, calling on them to report such incidents or certify that none happened.
Whether reports about 20,000 medical errors come in – that remains to be seen.

I am impressed with your dk confidence unfortunately after much deliberation I have concluded that any transitiion will be very painfull as anarchy is the weapon of last resort and appears the only one that may work. A very high price is payed when this weapon is used, a price a lot of us are not prepared to pay including me so we are reduced to shouting from the sidelines of coordinated ridicule. Whilst this situation continues as is now nothing will happen. If the masses start to take note or you have a weapon of truth that may work like Maud'Dib you will suffer his fate.
