Graham Hancock has his detractors, some of them may have to apologise and eat humble pie.

So, Egyptologist Howard Carter was born on this day in 1874. He discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 here are some original photographs -

I have asked the British Museum, who the figure at the back is, or what it is. No reply yet.
I'm assuming it will be a likeness of the boy king, but then that doesn't tie in with all the images of him online, so what or who is it.

It's hard to spot at first. How did he get in there? Could it be a local labourer or one of Carter's team rummaging about in the debris? Let us know what the BM has to say, please.

I almost didn't spot it - lol!

But I wonder if it might be a bust of Nefertiti or someone who looks like her. In common with many Egyptian figures of royalty - doesn't look how I would 'expect' and Egyptian to look.

They were into VERY close marriages and defects were prevalent for obvious reasons. Perhaps the same reasons that a certain 'type' of look was inbred into the royal dynasties (more European features) to distinguish them from those they ruled over.

Just a thought - nothing more learned I'm afraid.

Hey Quark. If you zoom into the image, the face does look masculine, I confident that there isnt room there for a person, so would assume that this is a bust of some sort. Still for something that has been there for a thousand years +

Sunburn - have you seen the reconstruction of the face of Tut? He doesn't have the chin of this one and I agree the figure does look masculine - but who is to say that an 'effeminate' looking young boy with refined features would not look a little like a female - especially if they might be related?

Cannot see it being one of the workers as where is the rest of his body? more likely to be a bust. Well spotted Sunburn,

They are usually pretty good, in my experience. If they don't respond, you could try the Ashmolean in Oxford.
