i agree with richard on the potential for polar reversal as we cross the galactic plain, involving a temporary absence of magnetic field laying us open to solar wind etc. the galaxy is said to have opposing charge either side of the spin.

that's the seed of reality in all this 2012 hype.
perhaps this scramble for elite power and self protection in underground bases / population reduction is based on this fear.

The poll reversal will not happen in 2012

If it does, we are all dead anyway, so no need to worry about it.

A pole flip is very unlikely indeed. The magnetic field of planet is induced by the spinning and charge of millions upon millions of tons of molten iron. The forces required to overcome this inertia and in so doing flip the poles I doubt exist this far trom the centre of the galaxy. The present slow creep of the poles may speed up. This is my laymens take. If I'm wrong HOLD TIGHT

Believe it - Or don`t believe it who cares? You are dead if it happens - you will die if it doesn`t.

It will not be 2012 though. Boy is there going to be some piss taking by some people, toward some people...

Is that what you are practising for then? We're all going to die sometime & Im living on borrowed time anyway, if the medical specialists are correct.

The molten iron enters the surface via volcanic eruptions and the mid-ocanic ridge. This means that as the lava cools the iron within it automatiically aligns with magnetic North. But such lava forms both the contental and oceanic crust. A change in the magnetic field would in theory affect the iron within the magna and the planets crusts. This could affect the natural flow of the magma within the Earth's, the culmative effect could be to cause pressure points which take the path of least resistance, causing earthquakes and volcani eruptions.

The Earth quake and volcanic activity we've recently seen may have nothing to do with 2012. These are the result of natural activity within the planet's core, event's which occur on a geological time scale. Internal activity causing volcanic eruptions overtime can lead to an increase in the world temp. enough to cause the ice caps to melt. This increases sea levels, water evaporation, resulting in increased rain in the greener parts of the world, but also causing droughts in summer and heavy snow fall in winter. Whilst already hot and dry parts of the world get less rain often leading to an expansion of any surrounding desert.

On this planet there are over 300 flood myths of only 3 relate to a Biblical type flood myth, the rest relate to the ending of the last ice-age. About 11,000 years an increase in the planets temp. was enough to cause the ice caps to melt, leading the same environmental changes and natrual disasters which we are now seeing, but which are reflected in the fore-mention flood myths. Since ice ages aren't periodic nor of predictable length (unlike the seasons), then the process which ended the last ice-age isn't directly related to the process which caused it. This means that an ice age isn't required in order for the latter process to begin.

But because we're dealing with events on a geological time scale, then volcanic eruptions such the recent volcanic eruption in Indonesia, the eruption which destroyed Krakatoa in 1883, all the way back to Thera in 1500 BC and even before then, may all be part of this same process which could ultimately lead to the changing of the planet's magnetic poles.

But the nature of the human mind causes people to seek solutions and make connections even where none exist, but connections which occur on a human time scale. This means that the envirnomental changes we're seeing are in all likelihood just part of a natural process, which by pure coincidence has occured at a time when our planet is about to cross the galactic plain.

By the way I did do a degree in Geology at Sunderland Poly. as part of the joint science degree.

good to have you back CTR but i wouldn`t go telling to many pepole about your degree they may think you just repeat parrot fashion and dont have any thoughts of your own on subjects which we both know is not the case. :)

I wouldn`t worry about not being able to view it. It`s just another 2012 load of old bollocks I`m afraid. I`m sure there is some money to be made from it unfortunately...

End of the Earth Postponed

It's a good news/bad news situation for believers in the 2012 Mayan apocalypse. The good news is that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar may not end on Dec. 21, 2012 (and, by extension, the world may not end along with it). The bad news for prophecy believers? If the calendar doesn't end in December 2012, no one knows when it actually will - or if it has already.

A new critique, published as a chapter in the new textbook "Calendars and Years II: Astronomy and Time in the Ancient and Medieval World" (Oxbow Books, 2010), argues that the accepted conversions of dates from Mayan to the modern calendar may be off by as much as 50 or 100 years. That would throw the supposed and overhyped 2012 apocalypse off by decades and cast into doubt the dates of historical Mayan events. (The doomsday worries are based on the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012, much as our year ends on Dec. 31.)

The Mayan calendar was converted to today's Gregorian calendar using a calculation called the GMT constant, named for the last initials of three early Mayanist researchers. Much of the work emphasized dates recovered from colonial documents that were written in the Mayan language in the Latin alphabet, according to the chapter's author, Gerardo Aldana, University of California, Santa Barbara professor of Chicana and Chicano Studies.
